How LionsClub of Savannah Began

At approximately 2:15 p.m. on May 11, 1922, Savannah joined the growing list of cities appearing on the roster of the International Association of Lions, an organization destined to become the greatest service group in the world.

A number of dedicated, community-minded men met at the Savannah Hotel to begin one of Lionism’s southernmost clubs. Father Ambrose of the Benedictine School explained the principles and organization of Lionism. From the group of men present Mr. W. G. Sutlive was selected as temporary chairman. Permanent officers were elected as follows:

On the evening of June 10, 1922 the Lions Club of Savannah received its official charter from representatives of the International Association of Lions from Chicago. In attendance were city officials, outstanding business men and women, heads of about all of the civic clubs and fraternal organizations, civic and social leaders. Presiding was E. W. Rosenthal, Belgian Consul and newly elected president of the Lions Club. Program for the evening was as follows:

  • (April) Future lions club members petition the City of Savannah to rename Estill Ave and Dale Ave to Victory Drive
  • (May 11), granted Club Charter by Lions International, our club started. Secretary-General Melvin Jones visits club
1923
  • Club proposed Junior College for Savannah, also widening of Bay Street and construction of a high bridge over Wilmington River to Tybee
1924
  • Community Chest formed
1925
  • Club adopted City Plan for Savannah and formed the first Intra-City Civic Committee.
1935
  • Secretary-General Melvin Jones visits club
1941
  • Sponsored Hinesville Lions Club and Statesboro Lions Club
1942
  • Club sponsors Savannah Cup Award (club with most net gain in membership from July thru May), State award
1947
  • (May 11) Club's 25th Birthday
1949
  • Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation organized., club starts Sight Conservation Program
1950
  • (Dec.) First Broom Sale stated
1953
  • Sponsored Port City Lions Club
  • (Nov) Lions educate public to give more money for schools, get majority vote to increase school taxes
1957
  • (Dec.) Orphans Christmas Party, monies from tail twister fines buy presents for the orphans
  • (July) Lions Roar bulletin started, Earl M. Holden, editor
1959
  • Club sponsors Little League Team
1960
  • Wheelchair program stated, club has 50 wheelchairs, club sponsors YMCA boy Cubs
1961
  • Water Safety Program started (Cookie Byrd), Highways Safety started
  • Polly Bergen helps with broom and mop sales
1962
  • (May 4) Lions International Pres. Per Stahl, spoke at clubs 40th birthday
  • (Dec.27) First Monarch Award, Mills B. Lane (Nick Mamalakis)
1963
  • Flags on Broughton St. (Lester Henderson), sponsored Garden City Lions Club
1965
  • State Conv., Atlanta, club won 1st place, best publicity & safety program
1966
  • State Conv., Augusta, club won 1st place, bulletin
1968
  • Peach Bowl (Chick-Fil-A) founded by Ga. Lighthouse, club sponsors Midget Football Team
1969
  • Second Monarch Award, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Roebling
1971
  • Leo Club started

  • (May 11) Clubs 50th Birthday
1973
  • Sponsored Wilmington Island Lions Club
1974
  • Talking Books program starts, club wins Decatur Award (outstanding project) at State Conv. in Columbus
  • (Sept.12) Georgia Camp for the Blind chartered
1975
  • (Mar. 27) Dr. Metts Jr. receives Third Monarch Award.
  • Used Eyeglasses program starts
1977
  • (Nov.) First Christmas Tree Sale started
1980
  • White Cane program adopted
  • Golf started, 6x at year; Cookout started Oct. & April
1981
  • (June 14) Flag Pole and Marker dedicated on River St.
  • (Dec.18) Salvation Army Bell Ringing started. Lionesses started
1982
  • (Mar.10) St. Patrick’s luncheon celebration started
1983
  • (April 7) Alexander Calder Jr. receives Fourth Monarch Award
1984
  • Bowling Teams formed , Blue and Gold, Lion of the Year award started
  • (June 1) Sponsored Tybee Island Lions Club
1985
  • (Feb.14) Ladies Night started, with style show
  • Sponsored Beauty Pageant contestant Holli Griner
1987
  • (Dec.10) Allen E. Paulson receives Fifth Monarch Award
1988
  • Sponsored Hostess City Lions Club, first Lioness club in Ga.
1993
  • Sponsored Savannah Royals baseball team for 11 and 12 year olds
  • Started Tom Williams Memorial Putt Putt Golf Tournament
  • Raised $12,000 for Campaign SightFirst ($146 per member)
  • (May) State Conv., Augusta, club won 1st place as Top club
1997
  • (May 11) Clubs 75th Birthday, at Mighty 8th Air Force Heritage Museum, Lions International 3rd V.P. James E. Ervin featured speaker
